What to Do with All the Time in the World?

Why does the phrase 9-to-5 stick around? It hasn't been 9-5 since forever.

I work a 8:30 to 5:30 corporate job, but I'm not overworked. Quite the opposite, in fact. Today is Wednesday, and so far I've worked roughly 5 hours and 31 minutes this week. Out of the roughly 24 hours that I've been in the office so far. That's all to illustrate that I have a lot of time on my hands to do nearly anything I choose. When I'm working from home, I can fill my time enjoying the media that I'm currently into (Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream on the Switch). But when I'm in the office, I want to appear somewhat professional and therefore refrain from whipping out my brightly colored gaming gizmo.

Whether at home or in the office, however, shallow entertainment can only fulfill me for so long. It's fun to watch my little Miis run around in their ant farm (home) and it's fun to read up on the latest games releasing on the Playdate (office), but I can't do that for hours without thinking, "Surely there's more to life than this?"

I'm thankful that I have all of my survival needs met. A stable income provides me with the means to procure a place to live and food to eat. Being bored is a privilege that I don't want to take for granted. Sometimes work picks up and the thoughts go away, but the inevitable return of the empty docket comes with renewed feelings of "am I making the most of this time?"

I'm reminded of the conversation starter: "If you didn't have to worry about money, what job would you do?" Put another way, "If you had all the money and time in the world, what would you spend your time doing?" And I'm lucky; I basically get to choose that and actually live it right now. So maybe instead of worrying about maximizing my time, I can think of it as a chance to try something new.
