In the Eye of the Storm
The past two weeks have been bonkers bananas busy at work! I started this job over a year ago now, and this has definitely been the busiest two weeks since I began.
Things have calmed down now, though, at least for today. We'll see if this is the eye of the storm or if the storm has truly subsided. In any case, I depart for Seattle in one and a half weeks! And once that happens, I'm on vacay mode!
August is going to be a busy month of travel for me. I am spending about half of it at work and the other half on PTO, which is exciting.
Recently I got back into reading again. When I got my AYN Thor, I went hard into gaming to really make the most of my new purchase. It was fun, but I think I missed reading a lot. Gaming and reading compliment each other well, though I think I could subsist solely on reading as a pastime. Can't say the same for gaming.
I read Rejection by Tony Tulathimutte over the weekend and really enjoyed it. It felt like a slow motion car crash that you couldn't help but keep staring at through your fingers. Very entertaining, thought-provoking, and certainly makes you feel pity. The characters are comically inept and Tulathimutte's turns of phrase had me laughing out loud.
I'm still having trouble with consuming content about a hobby instead of actually engaging with the hobby. Namely gaming, actually. Kind of odd. It's probably because intentionally picking out a game to devote time to feels more like a commitment than watching a video about that game. Never turns out as fun!
There's nothing quite like being obsessed with some piece of media or franchise or hobby. It's a feeling that I had a lot as a kid, and it's when I have this life-consuming obsession with something that I feel most connected to my childhood self. I think scrolling online and consuming content about the thing takes away from my own experience of it and kind of poisons my unique enjoyment of it. So recently I've been consciously choosing to avoid seeking out online discourse about things that I enjoy and hold dear.
